Get to grips with MIPS

What is MIPS?
MIPS is a brain protection system — engineered to add protection to helmets. The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is found inside the helmet, generally between the comfort padding and the EPS (a high-quality foam used to reduce energy). For certain impacts, the MIPS BPS can reduce harmful forces transmitted to the brain. MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System.

How does MIPS work?
The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is designed to add protection against rotational motion transferred to the brain. Rotational motion affects the brain and increase the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. When implemented in a helmet, the MIPS BPS can reduce rotational motion by redirecting energies and forces otherwise transferred to the brain. The core of the MIPS BPS is a low friction layer that allows the head to move 10-15 mm relative the helmet in all directions, reducing rotational motion to the brain. The MIPS BPS makes your helmet safer and adds protection.

Zilco are the exclusive supplier of Champion Helmets featuring the innovative MIPS technology to Australia and New Zealand. The following from the Revolve Helmet range is available now:

What makes a good equestrian helmet?
A riding helmet should obviously help protect you from getting hurt if you fall off your horse. The impacts that occur from falling are usually angled impacts. This can cause harmful rotational to your head, so you want a helmet that is intended to help manage those forces and reduce rotational motion. Equestrian helmets with a Mips® safety system are designed with an integrated low-friction layer that’s intended to help reduce those rotational forces during certain angled impacts.

Will a Mips® safety system make my helmet less comfortable?
We offer different Mips® systems for different helmet types, and each is positioned within the helmet so that you’ll hardly notice it. Mips® systems weigh between 25-45 grams, about the equivalent of a typical energy bar.

What is required for a helmet to have Mips?
No helmet is approved for Mips® use if it does not pass our strict test protocol.
